Before you dig, know what lies beneath your feet
We combine cutting-edge geophysical technology with expert archaeological insight to map the subsurface without breaking ground.
-
Reduce Risk: Avoid costly project delays.
-
Save Time: Map entire landscapes in days, not months.
-
Non-destructive: remote sensing preserves the evidence for future generations.
As a professional commercial unit, our economies of scale offer access to a wide range of the best equipment, to give you the highest quality result, in the shortest possible time – at a more accessible price. We also can also operate – within reason – anywhere in the world.
Bargheer Geophysics are able to call on in house archaeological expertise, facilitating liaison and understanding of your requirements. Remember: no job is too big or too small!
Why use Geophysics?
Traditional excavation is slow, expensive, and destructive. Geophysical surveys offer a non-invasive investigation of the earth, providing high-resolution maps of buried structures, voids, and artifacts.
Whether you are a commercial developer fulfilling planning requirements or a research institution pinpointing your next excavation site, our data empowers you to make informed decisions.
Our Technology & Services
We deploy a versatile suite of near-surface geophysical instruments, tailored to your site’s specific geology and objectives.
| Technology | What It Detects | Best Used For |
| Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) | High-resolution 3D mapping of walls, voids, floors, and utilities. | Urban sites, cemeteries, and complex structural remains. |
| Magnetometry (Gradiometer) | Variations in the earth’s magnetic field caused by burnt features, ditches, and iron. | Large-scale landscape surveys, prehistoric settlements, and kilns. |
| Earth Resistance (Resistivity) | Moisture-retaining features like buried stone walls, ditches, and tracks. | Detailed mapping of building footprints and garden archaeology. |
| Electromagnetic (EM) Induction | Simultaneous mapping of soil conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. | Identifying changing soil types, paleochannels, and metallic debris. |
Machine learning
At Bargheer Geophysics, we appreciate that time and resources need to be prioritised, especially in Chapter 8 investigations. Using feedback from archaeologists and other customers, we have developed a custom-built Machine Learning algorithm to automatically detect different types of underground features from one or more geophysical surveys– ranging from historical decomposed ruins and settlements, to precision positioning of modern buried pipes and cables. In the plan overview generated, anomalies are identified, delineated and categorized. These can be reviewed, augmented if necessary, and used a basis to inform a potentially more targeted excavation strategy. The creation of the plan drawing shortens time used to recognise and digitise the survey, as well as helps to ensure obvious anomalies are not overlooked due to human error. Who We Serve
Commercial Developers & Infrastructure
Navigate planning permissions smoothly. Our rapid pre-development surveys identify potential archaeological constraints early, saving you from budget-shattering surprises during construction.
Heritage Agencies & Museums
Map and manage vulnerable cultural resources. We provide precision data for conservation planning, site management, and public outreach without disturbing the soil.
Universities & Research Groups
Maximize your research budget. Use our high-resolution datasets to target your excavation trenches with surgical precision, ensuring every dig yields maximum results.
The Data-to-Knowledge Promise
We don’t just hand you a colored map and leave. Our team consists of qualified geophysicists and archaeologists. We translate complex raw data into clear, actionable, GIS-ready reports that speak the language of planners and historians alike. Source data can be made fully available to clients for archiving and further analysis, chargeable against a fee.

Use of different methods in combination
Depending on the targets of the investigation, we often advise the use of several methods in combination in order to provide as complete a picture as possible of what lies below. Different methods contribute different kinds of information, which can be synthesized in the interpretation.
For example, when using GCM surveys with archeology as the main focus. we would often combine the GCM survey with other types of geophysics, The software we use for processing is, in turn, able to extract extra information and value from data that already provides a lot of information about geology and geotechnical conditions.
